Adult Physiotherapy Services – As adults we have injuries and issues from work, play, and aging. I provide assessment, treatment, education and consultation to adults with problems related to sports and recreation injuries, Concussions, Vertigo/BPPV, Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoarthritis, and post surgical conditions incorporating the principles of patient-centered care. The goal is to achieve optimal recovery of function, movement, and maximize a patient’s quality of life. Here is a list of conditions I can help with:
- Vertigo/BPPV
- When crystals deep in the inner ear move rampantly though the small passages it gives our nervous system a false signal of movement, this leaves us very unsettled and the room spinning
- Treating vertigo involves a thorough assessment to find where the culprit crystals are hiding and specialized maneuvers to move them out.
- For more persistent vertigo there are additional exercises to help improve our balance and equilibrium
- Concussions
- Concussions can happen from everyday accidents like slips and falls, and work accidents like hitting your head on framing and things falling on you head, and from contacts during any sport.
- They can also happen without a direct impact to our heads.
- I use the strongest evidence from the best brains on brains in the world, the authorities on concussion
- I focus treatment on the
- Neck
- Vestibular system
- Vision
- Static and moving balance
- High level exertion
- And directly on activity and skills
- I also draw on my experiences from my own concussions finding first hand that getting back to relevant exercises helped me return to sport
- Rheumatoid Arthritis
- Rheumatoid arthritis is when our own immune system begins to attack normal tissue.
- Because of this attack it is imperative that careful management is implemented, otherwise greater damage can be done
- There is a specialized process assessment and management of rheumatologic conditions; and close communication with your family doctor and rheumatologist is always part of my management strategy.
- Osteoarthritis
- Osteoarthritis is gradual degeneration of the articular cartilage in the joints
- It is the most common form of arthritis
- This often affects the neck, shoulders, elbows, and hands, the low back, the hips, the knees and the big toe.
- Treatment focuses on improving joint function by increasing motion and strength.
- With proper treatment we cannot take away the osteoarthritis – to say so is a lie – but we can gain control over pain and regain and improve our lifestyle
- Sports and recreation injuries
- Whether they happen on the sports field or in the backyard, injuries can get in the way of our activities.
- Focusing on return to play is key to recovery
- Progressing you through the initial stages of healing to the final work hardening for your return with your activity and performance as the goal
- Tendonitis and tendinopathy
- Fractures
- Sprained joints
- Muscle tears
- ACL and PCL tears and repairs
- Ligament tears and repairs
- Numbness with activity
- Frozen shoulders
- Officially known as Adhesive Capsulitis, frozen shoulder is the painful loss of mobility over a prolonged period of time. Within the shoulder joint there is inflammation and sticking of the tissues wrapping the joint. There are two types
- Type 1 is truly an unfortunate circumstance and the disease is idiopathic, meaning we have no idea why it occurs. Frustratingly it starts without any identifiable injury to the area; however, with hard work we can battle it to keep the loss of motion at a minimum and then regain it.
- Type 2 happens from an insult to the shoulder; this can be a fall and impact to the joint, a surgery, or a fracture to any one of the bones of the shoulder girdle and arm. It too needs hard work to regain motion and strength.
- Hand and wrist injuries
- We use our hands to work, to shape things, to carry, push and pull; they are a distinct connection to our worlds.
- Hand and wrist injures need careful assessment and management
- Carpal tunnel
- Sprains
- Strains
- Tendon injuries
- Crush injuries
- Hyper-sensitivity
- Post surgical treatment
- Joint replacements including hips, knees, shoulders, elbows, and ankles
- Core strengthening after abdominal surgery
- Complex repairs to shoulders, ankles, elbows,
- Medial Patellofemoral ligament reconstruction
- Aging populations and risks, i.e. Falls
- With aging we can develop concerns with our strength and coordination
- We often require surgeries such as hip and knee replacements
- These should not hold us back from what we want to do
- Using defined protocols, but tailored to your needs I can help you keep and regain your independence.
